A one-time plea for a good cause — and have a chance to win!

I won’t utilize this space too often for personal things, but this is one I am passionate about and it gives our readers a chance to win some pretty cool things.

Let me give a bit of a back story, however.

harmer_sigOn August 17, 2007, my father lost his battle with lung cancer. It was a painful time in my life and for those of you who have lost loved ones, I’m sure you can relate. Not a day goes by where I don’t miss him or think about him. It was the second time he battled cancer and he just didn’t have it in him to beat it a second time.

Since then, I’ve been highly involved in our local Relay for Life.

Each year we have a small team (usually fewer than 10 people) who do our best to raise money for the cause. We usually manage to have upward of $2,000 raised for our team, which is solid for a small group. Some bigger teams don’t get to that level.

I’d like to keep up that trend.

Besides hoping the disc golf community may be interested in helping, I also want to make sure I maximize the people having the chance to win these items. I’ve even thrown in a bit more — just for the Rattling Chains readers.

Plastic giveaway: What’s your best story?

Somebody will win this... will it be you?

For those who don’t know me, I’m a pretty competitive softball player. I’ve been playing it since I was 17 and I’ve loved every minute of it.

I’ve run a team for that long as well — and we’ve had a lot of success. We’ve won championships, reached the finals and done all sorts of fun things.

But one thing I always remember was playing in a league as a younger player — and I was one of the youngest on the team. During those days, I listened more than anything.

Oh the stories.

Things about the days gone by. Past tournaments and league shenanigans. Great games and road trips. It was a grassroots way of playing the sport of softball.

In recent years, the style of softball I play (modified) seems to be fading some. The local leagues have dwindled and most have folded. Slow pitch has taken over, especially co-ed.

In those young days, several of the older players told me that I grew up in the wrong generation. I was a bit of a throw back on the field in the way I played and how I saw and viewed the game.

I see disc golf in the same way. A growing sport in a grassroots atmosphere. But really growing — not on the flip side, such as softball was (at least in our area).

So, who won the plastic?

After finally getting everyone into the Random.org randomizer, the winner of our first plastic giveaway has been decided!

First, let me say how educational and interesting the responses were! So many different discs mentioned and I really enjoyed those who told about why the disc is their favorite.

And the winner is…

If you didn’t win this time, keep coming back. We have all sorts of things to give away and I received a few more pieces of plastic donated this past weekend. So, I’ll be coming up with some new ideas for ways to give away more plastic.

I’ve also been told by a few people/companies that we have some items to give away coming our way. Hopefully it will arrive soon and we can have some more fun giveaways.

You do realize I’m stalling, right?

This is kind of like American Idol and those talent shows… they hold off and hold off before announcing the winner.

And for us? Well this is plastic! The Innova Lycan!
