Poll 47: Buying discs in 2013

For those of us in states where there is actually a true winter, the season is somewhat approaching.

For those of you with great weather all year, well, the “official” season seems to be coming upon us.

weekly_pollThat’s right — disc golf season.

And with that will likely come many releases of discs from all sorts of companies, big and small. Some new plastic from Innova and Discraft, perhaps? Maybe a nice new rubber disc from Vibram? Or how about something from Latitude 64? Maybe you’re even salivating to see what this whole Prodigy thing is about?

Oh so many new discs will likely be coming at some point!

But we’ll get back to that when we talk this week’s poll.

First, let’s go back to last week’s poll and see some results.

We wanted to know how old you were when you first started this wonderful sport of disc golf. We received 227 votes for this poll and the results were close.

The winning age group was 21-30 years old, garnering 65 votes (29 percent). Right behind was 11-20 years old with 63 votes (28 percent). The group 31-40 years took third47 votes/21 percent).

Then it dropped off a little, as 41-50 placed fourth (23 votes/10 percent), followed by 51-60 (15 votes/7 percent), 10 years or younger (10 votes/4 percent), 60-74 (3 votes/1 percent) and 75 or older (1 vote/0 percent).

Let’s see what some people had to say.

I had always heard about disc golf (it sounded interesting) and dabbled in other disc sports like ultimate but I never got around to actually playing disc golf until I was 26. It was this past May and as part of my bachelor party, my best man decided it’d be a fun outing. Turns out it was and I was immediately hooked. I’ve been playing as much as possible ever since, including in the wintery snow. I only wish I would have tried it sooner. I really love this game!

Sounds like the same boat others have been in — a wish they had found it sooner in life. A cool story though and it’s nice your best friend got disc golf into the bachelor party.

In 1994 I was a freshman in high school and this kid comes into class with these skinny Frisbee looking things. I ask him whats going on with those. He said its called disc golf. I knew I had to check it out so after school he took me to the local 9. A park I had been at before but never payed attention to the baskets. Needless to say I was hooked ever since but it wasn’t until 2009 that I started playing tourneys

A very cool story. It would be even better if more kids these days brought those “Frisbees” to school and got more friends to start playing at a younger age.

I started in 1973, 40 years ago, when I was 15. Started playing in a schoolyard. Went to Ann Arbor Frisbee Festival in Spring 1974 and I was hooked. Became member of PDGA when first started in 1976. Have been playing ever since, sometimes in clubs and for many years singly. Back into a club in Melbourne, FL. Trying to be an example this game is “fun for all ages.”

That is a fantastic story and it’s great to see you are still going at it and enjoying this sport!

In my youth, I abused my body with a lot of heavy hitting contact sports so, at the ripe old age of 32, with bad knees and back, I was looking for something a little more entertaining than walking but a lot less impact than most team sports. A friend at work had been trying to get me out to play so here I am, a year later, traveling up and down the east coast of Australia for tournaments and absorbing everything I can from the online community.

I have a feeling you aren’t the only one who found this sport as a way to stay active with less contact. That truly is a great selling point on this game — one can be as competitive as they want and not have to worry about being pummeled by an opposing player. Well, outside of maybe having to duck once or twice for an errant throw!

First time I played was in a P.E. class in elementary school. Enjoyed it so much my mom would take me and my brother to the park sometimes to play with the cheap freebie Frisbees we had, until one day a guy at the course saw us playing and gave me and my brother each an old Innova driver from his bag. Played a few times in middle school with the boy scouts, and then when I was about 16 I really got hooked and I’ve been playing ever since!

It really is nice to hear about people starting when they were kids. That’s a key for continued growth — get the younger generation hooked.

There are some other great stories on the page of last week’s poll. I would encourage you to go read some of the longer ones — they really are fun to read and it’s interesting to see how others found the game and when.

And now, let’s shift to this week’s poll.

Many people out there are disc junkies in that they buy a lot of plastic. Others aren’t so much along those lines.

So, with the true season fast approaching, we want to know — how many discs do you think you will buy this year?

Will it be a lot?

Not many at all?

Let us know. And drop a comment below telling us your thoughts on buying plastic and why you buy so many or so few.

  1. I said 6-15 and I’ve already purchased a few this year. Normally I’d say 20 or more but I’m having shoulder surgery so I’ll be out of the loop for most of the year, therefore I won’t be needing many in 2013. But look out 2014; I’ve got to make up for what I’m missing out on this year.

  2. All of our family’s discs are Innova. However, we watch and learn a lot from Discraft’s instructional videos. Maybe I should buy and try some of their discs as a payback for the work they do in teaching the game?

  3. Just started getting into the collector side of it after playing for a year. Already hoping to pick up a few of the newly announced Discraft discs, Innova’s McPro Aviar and the bookstore by me has a few Innova first runs hiding away that I hope don’t get scooped up before I get to them. I voted 6-15. May be closer to the 15 end.

  4. I said 6-15,and I hope I actually stick to that. My problem is that I know me, and I’ll probably go way beyond that. I really like getting new discs. There is just something cool about having a new weapon in the bag.

  5. I said 6-15 because I’ve already purchased three discs this year. I usually buy a new disc when I new to replace an important lost disc, but every once in a while you fine a 30 dollar disc sitting in the used section for 5 bucks and it’s impossible to pass up.

  6. I’m working on simplifying my bag. I usually carry 10-12 discs with me and they have always been 10-12 different discs. but I want to have 5-6 discs, perhaps 7 and then have multiples of each disc. so, considering i have 1 of each dis, i’ll have to buy a few to complete that outlook.

  7. Boy, I am hoping to keep it down to around a dozen this year. I’ve only been playing a year and 1/2, and I already have an embarassing number of discs. I pretty much went crazy last year, and I have WAY more than I need.

That said, I went right out and bought a Flywood based on the article on this blog, so maybe I just don’t have enough willpower to keep myself under control!

  8. Probably around 5. I don’t lose a lot of plastic and I have a few boxes with back ups. I do like the Mamba and could use a few more so there you go 🙂

  9. Typically it might be 6-15 but I have chosen 0-5 because of the circumstances. Just before this past Christmas I won a tourny and became the proud owner of 5 new discs after spending my vouchers then Christmas hits and I acquired about 10 more. Needless to say, these past winter months have been brutal battling the cold and trying to get a feel all the new plastic. It has been extremely overwhelming and It has been a lot to take on. I feel like multiple discs in my bag are just wasting away because I have not been able to experience their true worth in my game. Now, I have vowed to never get more than 1 (maybe 2) new disc at a time!

  10. I would usually only say a fozen or so but I have recently been given an amazing sponsorship with Lat64. I’m fairly set with much of my bag and the few things I may need will come to me as part of my disc allotment. What I sont use I plan on selling away and that will give me extra funds. And we all know what extra funds mean. I usually go for 1-2 collector discs a month so add in the extra dough…and yeah I’ve got an addiction.

  11. I said 26 – 50 because I am an addict, and I love new plastic, plus I am TD’ing a Vibram Birdie Bash, and will take advantage of the discounted price on all of the molds. I have also already purchased 1 of each of the MVP molds this year, in addition to many limited run discs. So I’m already at twenty for the year.
