Poll 7: Tournament count this year?

Before we get to this week’s poll, let’s take a peek back at last week’s answers and responses.

We asked our readers why they played disc golf. And, I have to be honest, I did not expect the winning vote — exercise.

A total of 94 people cast votes for this poll (voters were able to choose up to two answers). Exercise garnered 34 percent (32 votes) of the poll. Being out in nature followed in second with 27 percent of the vote (25 votes).

Hanging out with friends placed third (23 percent/22 votes), and competition (22 percent/21 votes) placed fourth. Relaxing and watching the disc fly tied for fifth (21 percent/20 votes).

It’s funny, because I’ve heard so many people say disc golf isn’t exercise. I’ve even heard disc golfers say that. And it makes me scratch my head. I always thought getting out, being active, walking a couple of miles and working different parts of your body would be exercise, no?

It’s not running a marathon, but it’s exercise. I’ve left many tournaments knowing the next day I was going to feel it.

So, it makes me smile knowing exercise was the top vote getter (it was one of the ones I personally voted for, along with hanging out with friends).

There were some things to definitely think about, too. As reader Ben notes, it’s a relaxing way to spend a day.

As we all know, life can be stressful. Disc golf for me, is a time during my day where I can relax and enjoy something that I love to do. Whether I’m on the course, putting in the backyard, out by myself, or with a bunch of good friends, disc golf is my way of relaxing after a long day or week.

Two choices weren’t enough for Brian Buller, who notes that the game is so much more for him.

For me, the reason that I play disc golf is because it’s my passion. It’s the one thing in my life that just feels right like it was meant to be. I enjoy every aspect of it: the exercise, competition, sportsmanship, adventure, relaxation, and time spent with awesome people. Not to mention it’s the one thing that I’m actually better than most people at doing.

The having a hard time picking just two seemed to be a recurring theme this week. But, we can’t make the polls too easy, can we?

Said Dustin:

Had a hard time picking just two! Just being outside and taking my mind off all of life’s little worries were my two top ones. I also think disc golfers are some of the friendliest people you’ll meet in any sport and I always enjoy meeting new people on the course and talking plastic.

This is a great point. In any game/sport/hobby, it’s always nice to run into like-minded people and be able to just talk “shop” before/during or after participating.

Personally, one of the best parts of this game is the amount of ways it can be beneficial for an individual. From health to competition to relaxing to whatever else — disc golf is a sport that can be done for so many reasons.

Thanks for sharing your stories and thoughts on the last poll, everyone.

And — as always — let’s give a little something away to a random person for commenting on the poll’s page. This week’s winner is Brock! Get me an address so I can send you something from the prize box!

Now to this week’s poll — tournaments.

We want to know — how many PDGA-sanctioned tournaments (any tier) do you plan on playing this year?

Vote away and let us know in the comments your thoughts about why you play. A random commenter will be selected for a prize, so make sure you leave your thoughts! (Remember, to be eligible for this, you must leave the comment here, not in other places!)

  1. There’s several tournaments in the Joliet, IL area that I love competing in, culminating in the Illinois state championship, which is going to be a qualifier for the Vibram Open this year, so it adds some extra incentive to do well. More importantly though, the tournaments are all run by local players who are very passionate about the sport, and volunteer their time to make everything a success. They may not have the biggest payouts or anything like that, but spending a day or two competing and having fun is, to me, more important than getting a big win or player’s pack.

  2. This is my first year to attempt to play in any tournaments. With as busy as I will be this summer, I’m hoping to participate in 1-2 to break the ice so to speak.

  3. I’ve played one tournament so far and only plan on playing a few more at most just because of my schedule. If I could play more, I definitely would. Tournaments are always a good experience.

  4. Fatherhood calls, so it is much easier for me to pop out for a quick round rather than play in a full tourney. I am hoping to take part in the Sky High Showdown at Wrightwood in August, and maybe another local event.

  5. Unfortunately, there aren’t any PDGA sanctioned tournaments near where I live and I don’t have the money or the flexibility with my job to travel to a tournament. However, there are a lot of tournaments put on by the locals throughout the year. I played in my first ever tournament this January and had a great time so I hope to be able to attend more of them in the future!

  6. I am only playing in 3-6 tourneys this year. Previous years I have participated in 15-20 but I have a baby on the way and I’m in the process of buying a house so my attention has been elsewhere. I have participated in more local minis so I could keep on touch with my tourney friends but have stepped back from competition for a while.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited with everythin that is going on but I can’t wait to be past all this so I can get out and compete again.
