Poll 5: How many discs do you carry during a round?

The world of disc golf bags seems to be quite large.

There’s not just a few you can look through to see which one you like best — there are so many! That showed in last week’s poll when we asked our readers what kind of bag they used.

A total of 228 people votes in this poll with the winner being an Innova bag with 59 votes (26 percent). Fade was second with 46 votes (20 percent), followed by Revolution (29 votes/13 percent) and GripEQ (27 votes/12 percent).

The fifth spot went to other brand — so 22 voters use a brand we didn’t list.

There were some interesting bags mentioned, too. Reader Chris Leo talked very highly about the Mystery Ranch Golf Mahal bag. If you haven’t seen one of these yet, follow the link. Wow. Talk about being able to pack a lot of stuff. I’m sure this bag wouldn’t be for a lot of people, but it could be used in a lot of situations!

There also seems to be some love for the GripEQ bags. In the research I’ve done, they seem like a great backpack bag.

At least one reader mentioned being ready to downsize their bag — and I’m on the same page there. Though I love the revolution bag I carry, the reality is I don’t need something that size all the time. So I might be looking to find a good, rugged bag for casual rounds so I can carry fewer discs and have a lighter walk.

One other thing I noticed with some of the responses were people saying they had more than one bag they used. I assume that it’s the difference between serious and casual play. Either way, it seems to be a logical choice for some to have this sort of a setup.

Reader Stan the Man even tells us about a homemade pull/push cart that he uses. I’ve seen several people who have done this and I’m sure there are many others out there who do this.

In the end, it seems like people have a couple different reasons for the brand of bag they use — capacity, comfort, what they carry and ease of use. It’s obviously a personal preference, but it’s interesting to see what people think when choosing products such as a bag.

Thanks to everyone who commented and voted. As usual, we like to send a little something out to a random person chosen from those who commented on the site.

This week, the randomizer over at Random.org selected Steve as the winner. I’ll be contacting you via e-mail for your address so I can send you a prize!

And now for this week’s poll!

With all this talk about bags and the size of them and what they carry, we got wondering…

What about the discs?

I’ll let you decide whether this is for casual or serious play — or any other kind of play. But we want to know:

How many discs do you carry during a round? Are you a minimalist? Do you carry many? Maybe it’s doubles of five discs? Four putters?

Vote away and let us know in the comments your thoughts and reasons why you carry as many or as few of discs as you do. A random commenter will be selected for a prize, so make sure you leave your thoughts!

  1. I carry about 13 discs at a time during any given round because that’s all that my bag will hold. Although sometimes if I get a new disc or two I’ll only carry that disc and a putter so I can get a feel for it and break it in faster.

  2. Ten discs for now, that’s all I can fit in my bag. I’m trying to keep my bag simple and learn how certain discs fly first: For now it’s Leopards, Buzzz and APX putter, but multiple of each.
Once I have the feeling that I actually know what I’m doing with those discs I will probably branch out, but this might be a while 😉

  3. I carry 2 putters, 2 mid range discs and usually about 6 to 8 drivers. Like Bryan also said, that’s all my bag will hold, but I really feel as if I have a disc for every throw I need to make.

  4. I carry multiples of my favorite discs. About 2-3 of each of the following: nuke, katana, eagle, and flick. One magic putter, and one sidewinder. My bag will carry about 15 but I don’t like to stuff it, so I carry 12-13.

  5. I carry about 25 total, but some of those are duplicates of my fav molds. My bag is predominantly foreign, with about 90% being Lat64. The Havoc, Halo, Flow and Striker being duplicates, 2 each. I also have a Pain (mid) a Trident (hybrid) a Core(mid) and a Fuse(mid). I carry 1 Westside, Sword. 3 Discrafts- ESP Hornet,Z Nuke SS and ESP Nuke. And 3 Discmania- C-line MD2, 2 C-line PD2s,and C-line DD2. There are 3 Innovas- 2 Yeti Aviars, and an old reliable Condor.

  6. I don’t do as much pre-round scouting as a should; wind, my current arm strength, and a variety of other factors determine my disc choice hole by hole. I could probably cut down a few discs but it really doesn’t matter much to me at this point.

  7. I do keep a light bag because I don’t like carrying all of the weight, I only have ten discs at any given time, and too many discs you start to get confused and get away from our “go to” discs. Or sometimes we may be tempted to throw too many mulligans further confusing players, and tiring the arm too early. Obviously I play mostly casual rounds with the exception of one tournament.

  8. I carry twenty. I have specific discs that work for different shots, side arm, vac hand, thumber, straight, hyzer, anhyzer. I do try and cut to about 15 for tournaments

  9. I bring around 15 discs (2 putters, 4 fairway drivers, 3 midrange, and 6 drivers). Any more than that and I feel like discs will become redundant. With the spread I carry now, I have a disc for mostly every situation my home course can throw at me.

  10. It really all depends on the course and weather before I gear up my bag for a day on the course. But 10-15 fits me well and I’ll go more then that sometimes in a tournament in case I lose one in the water or I happen to end up on that one spot of the course that I forgot to practice, because who ever wants to practice those upside down skip shots behind 4 trees with no view of the basket. The only reason I bring up the weather is that wind can change the stability so much that I wanna make sure I have options when I tee off with no wind on 1 and at 10 it is blowing 30 plus MPH. Mid ranges take up the most room and you can never have too many Rocs on hand so a full bag is normal. Plus the only downfall of my bag is no dividers. If the bag is not full, the discs will slide everywhere and that’s just not fun. But in my small bag it would be an XG Roc, a Mako, TeeBird, Wraith, and a putter.

  11. I’m carrying two putters, three mid-range and about five different drivers. I have more that I use, but I’ll only bring them if the course I’m playing calls for it.

  12. I carry a different number depending on what course/circumstance the day brings. At my local course I know all the pin positions well And no exactly which discs I will be using; therefore I often carry 6-10 while discing there. When I do sanctioned tournaments I usually bring 20+ just in case.

  13. The gorilla boy simian can hold up to 32 discs, a bit more if you carry more drivers than mid ranges. I carry the full 32. I am more of a specialist and use over half of the discs I carry in a round. I have quite a few that are back-ups to my “goto” discs just in case I lose one. I also have discs that I use for “with the wind” and “against the wind”. Yes, I know that, if I throw them correctly, most discs can be used for most situations but, I like having easy options… 🙂

  14. 21 in the bag right now…I’ve got the space, so I figure I might as well use it even though I could probably do fine with half that many.

  16. I’m at 7 in the bag right now in my efforts to cut down on the number of molds I carry. I’m sporting a Star Roadrunner, 2 DX Teebirds, 2 DX Rocs, and 2 Westside Swan 2s. These discs are helping me learn how to shape lines and choose my shot better, rather than just reaching for a disc I know will do it for me. Eventually, I will add backups and premium plastics for some of them, but for now it is keep everything streamlined, and I love it.

  17. I’m a casual player only. I carry about 5 drives, 3 mids, and a couple putt & approach discs. However, I must say a few of my lowest scored rounds came from playing with only an approach disc! Guess my arm isn’t quite ready for the maximum distance drivers I like to use.

  18. I carry 16-20 and will use up to ten on a round. If I play a second I will mix it up to see what I can get out of discs that I don’t use all of the time. Windy conditions will dictate what discs I may use.

  19. I carry between 15 and 24 discs. Most times around 18. I have my go to discs, sometimes in multiple plastics or just as a backup in case. Plus I carry a couple “special” discs that I use in situations that require something beyond my drive, approach and usual putting throws. I will also carry a couple newer discs to a casual round to break in for future use.

  20. Interesting poll in that 81% of the voters prefer to carry more than 10 discs, while only 19% voted that they carry 10 or fewer discs most of the time. Amazingly, by comparison, out of 20 posted comments, 40% of the posts say they usually carry 10 or less discs, while only 60% say they carry more than 10 discs. Several comments revealed their desire to cut back their amount of discs. For me, I began by carrying as many as I could haul, which was about 15-20 discs or more. I’ve concluded that I need to only need to carry my best distance and control disc which I will use for drives and approaches. I also include a “Frisbee-shaped” approach-putting disc such as a Mako, Aviar, or StarDart which I’ve found to resist rolling. Favorite putters are the Mako (a large StarDart), Stryker, and XCaliber. I’ll also include an Aerobie Arrow for situations requiring straight shots in windy conditions and it can float in water hazards. Last but not least, I’ll duplicate my “best distance” thrower and include a “don’t care” disc for high-risk throws. In addition, I take along a driver made of Champion, Star, or Blizzard plastic to use on coarse surfaces or in the midst of trees to preserve my valued, but more tender plastics. I may include an Aerobie Epic for drastic hyzers. All in all, I carry about 7-10 discs.

  21. 25 discs – 11 distance drivers, 7 fairway drivers, 5 mid-ranges, and 2 putters. I’m in good shape and do a fair amount of backpacking so it doesn’t bother me to carry the weight around and I don’t want to ever be without the disc I need…even in a casual round (although casual is relative since I’m pretty competitive and always want to shoot as low as I possibly can). Some are specialty discs for odd situations or a heavier version of another disc for windy days, but I usually throw at least 60% of the discs on any given round.

  22. I carry four discs: putter, mid, fairway, and distance. I started doing this for the fun factor of being able to just carry my discs in my hand without bothering with using a bag. The fun factor part worked out great and I was surprised to find using just four discs actually improved my game.

I think there are two reasons this minimilist approach worked so well for me: I really learned what I could do with each disc, which gave me a lot of confidence in my shots, and the reduced decision making allowed me to concentrate on the shot in front of me without having doubts about disc choices.

    • That is an excellent rationale for the mental game… too many discs can make you think too much about the disc, and not the actual shot itself! The last thing you want to do after a poor shot is blame the disc! It is mostly “operator error” coupled with too many choices taking away from the actual shot making process.

  23. I most often play with a Revolution mini bag and carry 10 discs: 2 putters, 3 different mids, TL and TeeBird, and 3 distance drivers. Overall, a minimalist approach forces me to choose what I really need to fill a shot slot; I’ve learned to sculpt different lines with the same discs that I know and love.

But I do like to experiment and try new discs so the small bag isn’t always big enough. And I do have so many favorites–it’s nice to have them when I want them. Plus, in a tourney it’s nice to have backups in case I lose a disc.

  24. I like to carry two of the following: Putters, Sharks, Stingrays and Vulcans. I find in wet grass, I always have one that is dry. Beyond that I carry 6-8 more discs.

  25. I carry about 21 Discs, + or – 1 depending on if I have lost a couple recently that have gone unreplaced or bought something new to try out. I throw a lot of various shots so I have a vast variety of discs depending on Stability and speed. I am in the process of trying to down size to about 15 to 18 discs just so I have less weight in my bag. I know that doesn’t seem like much, but I have a few discs that I probably could go with out. It is something I think a lot of us fight with. I do however have two bags. I carry a Crunch Box for my Mountain golf bag. I have learned through the years that discs fly more stable at elevation, there for I have a bag of about 12-15 discs I use for golf at elevation that is both lighter and less stable then my regular custom bag. I would love it if I could bring myself to a point where I have as many discs in my regular bag as I do in my Mountain bag.

  27. I am carrying 22 discs tomorrow @ Optimist DGC in Ft. Morgan! And I will always put the maximum in my bag from here on out because of last weekend….I packed my bag with midrange discs, being the first time I’ve played Johnny Roberts DG in Colorado (short & technical) and I pulled out an R-Pro Cro on #9 that I haven’t thrown in 12+ months and behold…My first ACE! If not for my plastic hoarding bag, my signature moment every DG player has, may not have happened!

  28. For tourneys I try to downsize a bit but I usually carry anywhere between 17-22 just for testing and learning purposes. Also can’t speak highly enough about the Mystery Ranch bags, they have more than enough room for all your discs and more equipment (snacks, rain gear, etc..) plus being a Montana boy I’ve got to support the locals!

  29. Having played frisbee & disc sports for over 40 years, I have gotten to the point of throwing everything flat and picking the disc that flies the way I need naturally. If I need to go left to right, I use an under stable disc rather than make something vary from its normal flight. I found I was always changing the release angles (of my favorite discs) to make something “do” something rather than just picking the disc that flies that way naturally. This also gives me more input when it is time to replace favorites when they get worn. I use lighter or heavier for distance, placement (landing), or wind control. I carry 20, with all doing something different. I put my favorites away in the Iowa winters & buy backup discs for my favorites & they will be broken in by spring. I keep a couple dozen extras in the trunk. I throw my backups when I play a new course so I won’t beat up or lose my best discs.
